Acetonitrile, abbreviated as ACN, is the simplest organic nitrile, usually also called methane cyanide and methylnitrile. It is a colorless and transparent liquid at room temperature. It is highly volatile and has a special Chemicalbook smell similar to ether. It is flammable and burns when burned. Accompanied by bright flames. Miscible with water, methanol, carbon tetrachloride, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, dichloroethane and many unsaturated hydrocarbon solvents.
Purpose
The main use of acetonitrile is as a solvent.
Production method
Acetonitrile is usually a by-product of the ammonia oxidation method to prepare acrylonitrile. It can also be synthesized by the acetic acid ammonia method using aluminum trioxide as a catalyst and reacting at 360°C in one step.
