Related terms: sodium benzoate, cholesteryl benzoate, food preservative.
Benzoic acid and its sodium salt (sodium benzoate) are commonly used food preservatives. It has the strongest antiseptic properties under acidic conditions and has the effect of inhibiting the growth of fungi, bacteria and mold. When used as a drug, benzoic acid is usually applied to the skin in combination with salicylic acid to treat skin diseases such as ringworm. Benzoic acid is a raw material for the production of pesticides, dyes, medicines, spices, mordants and plasticizers. It is also a modifier for polyamide resins and alkyd resins and a rust inhibitor for steel equipment. In addition, benzoic acid can also be used in the synthetic fiber, resin, coating, rubber and tobacco industries.
Sodium benzoate is similar to potassium sorbate. Benzoic acid and its sodium salt occur naturally in plants (especially berries), but are generally obtained industrially through chemical synthesis. Sodium benzoate has a wide range of applications as a preservative and is often used in food (such as vinegar, soy sauce, meat, fish, pickled foods, etc.), beverages (especially soft drinks) and personal care products (dyes, cosmetics, etc.) Preparations) and other industries, it is widely used in countries around the world.
In addition to being used as a preservative, benzoic acid is also an intermediate in organic synthesis. Cholesterol benzoate is the earliest liquid crystal phase substance discovered by humans and is the main component of display liquid crystals. It can be used as a thermochromic liquid crystal after being mixed with cholesterol nonanoate and cholesterol oleyl alcohol carbonate, and is widely used in the field of anti-counterfeiting packaging. In addition, cholesteryl benzoate is also an intermediate in the synthesis of vitamin D3.
Methyl benzoate occurs naturally in clove oil, ylang-ylang oil and tuberose oil. It has a strong aroma and is often used in the preparation of fragrances and artificial essential oils. It can also be used as an organic solvent. Ethyl benzoate occurs naturally in flue-cured tobacco leaves, peaches, pineapples and black tea. It is a component of some natural and synthetic flavors and can be used to make fruit flavors, etc. Propyl benzoate occurs naturally in sweet cherries, clove stems, and butter. It has a nutty or fruity aroma and is used in foods as a synthetic flavoring. It also has antimicrobial properties and is used as a preservative in cosmetics.
