Methyl methacrylate

Chinese name: methyl methacrylate, referred to as MMA is an important chemical raw material that can self-polymerize or copolymerize with other monomers in the presence of light and heat or catalysts. It is mainly used to produce polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA for short) and polyvinyl chloride impact modifiers (such as ACR, MBS). It can also be used in coatings, adhesives, textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries and other fields. It has a wide range of uses.

Main synthesis process of MMA
There are many synthesis methods for MMA, including acetone cyanohydrin method (ACH method), isobutylene/tert-butanol oxidation method (C4 method), ethylene method (C2 method), methanol-methyl acetate method (C1 method), etc., according to their The raw material carbon number is different and can be divided into C1 route, C2 route, C3 route and C4 route.
From a global perspective, the most commonly used production process is the ACH method. This process technology is relatively mature, stable and simple, accounting for about 61.6% of the world’s production, mainly concentrated in North America, Western Europe, and China; followed by the C4 method, developed by Japan Shokubai Chemical Developed by Industrial Corporation and Mitsubishi Rayon Company in 1982, the technology is advanced, the raw materials are non-toxic and harmless, there are few by-products and the cost is low, accounting for about 30.5% of the world’s production.

Colorless liquid, easily volatile. Soluble in various organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, acetone, etc. Slightly soluble in ethylene glycol and water.

Usage:

Mainly used as a monomer of organic glass, and also used to make other plastics, coatings, etc.
